On 26-28 August, 2020 the 7th session of the Committee on Statistics was held in ESCAP. More than 200 delegates – representatives of national statistical offices and relevant agencies of the Commission’s member states and associate members, international organizations, NGOs and others took part in the meeting. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic the session was held in a “hybrid” format – with presence in the UNCC of officials from the ESCAP member states’ permanent missions accredited in Bangkok and online-participation of experts from the capitals of the member states. Russian delegation was composed from representatives of the Russian Federal State Statistics Service and the Russian Permanent Mission to ESCAP.
During three-day discussions the participants of the session analysed development of cooperation in Asia and the Pacific in the area of statistics, defined ways to increase effectiveness of monitoring of Agenda-2030 implementation in the region through broader application of statistical tools. Delegates exchanged experience in practical use of statistics, approaches to improvement of work of national statistical services.
Based on the results of the discussions the Committee defined priorities for further activities of the Commission on the statistical track: development of exchange of experience for improving quality of official statistics produced in the Asian and Pacific countries and for its practical use for the purpose of tackling social and economic problems, broader assistance for countries in strengthening professional skills of statisticians from national statistical offices and organization of integrated statistical reviews, promotion of innovative methodologies of production of statistics.
