Travel to Russia
On May 24, 2017 the «W Hotel Bangkok» hosted a «Russian Evening» gala reception, organized by the Russian Embassy in Bangkok with the support of the hotel’s administration, Kasikorn Bank, CP Group, Singha Beer, Stella Artois and other sponsors and partners.
The event was devoted to the 70th anniversary of the opening of the USSR Embassy in Thailand. In May 1947, the Soviet Union and the Kingdom of Siam agreed on reciprocal establishment of embassies at the level of envoys. The Soviet Embassy was granted an old mansion in downtown of Bangkok, which is known as the «House on Sathorn». The Embassy stayed there until 1999. Today the mansion is home for a fancy hotel and a restaurant.
The evening was opened by the Ambassador of the Russian Federation to the Kingdom of Thailand H.E. Mr. Kirill Barsky who emphasized that the decision to establish the USSR Embassy in Bangkok endorsed by His Majesty the late King Bhumibol Adulyadej of Thailand marked a beginning of the qualitatively new stage of the development of relations between the two countries. The Thai-Russian Chamber of Commerce Vice-President Mr. Vitaly Kiselev who used to work at the Embassy in the 1980s and the 1990s told a few stories about work and leisure of Soviet diplomats at that time. To the sounds of music by Pyotr Tchaikovsky played by the string quartet of the Royal Bangkok Symphony Orchestra the guests with the great interest examined archive photos from private collections exhibited on the margins of the party.
Among numerous guest of the reception were H.E. Miss. Busadee Santipitaks, Director-General of the Department of Information of the MFA of Thailand, Mr. Watt Chirathivat, CEO of the Central Group, Mr. Sompan Charumilinda, Chairman of the TNN 24 TV Company, H.E. Mr. Chalermpol Thanchitt, former Ambassador of Thailand to Russia, Mrs. Kamala Sukosol, renowned singer, Mr. Arto Artinian, Honorary Consul of Armenia in Bangkok, other Thai friends of the Embassy, representatives of the Russian business community. H.E. General Chaichan Changmongkol, Permanent Secretary for Defence, Ministry of Defence of Thailand, sent to the Ambassador his congratulations on the jubilee and a flower basket.
This special party will be remembered not only because it was held in the former USSR and Russian Embassy’s premises in Thailand. For the first time ever the «House on Sathorn» treated guests with black caviar and pancakes, wholly cooked sturgeons, Russian and Georgian delicacies, Russian Standard vodka and homemade chili pepper drink «Pertsovka», Ararat Armenian cognac, Abrau Durso champagne from the Krasnodar region of Russia, Stella Artois beer, 2014 Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc and 2012 Mouton Cadet.
