On May 18, 2018 a solemn inauguration ceremony opening the Honorary Consulate of the Russian Federation in Suratthani province was held in “W Koh Samui” Hotel. Mr. Ramnet Jaikwang, Mayor of Samui, Mr. Muensilp Sinn Poolsawat, Vice-Mayor, representatives of provincial and municipal authorities, business community, mass media, abbot of the local Ascension Church priest Alexiy Golovin as well as numerous Russian citizens and compatriots living in Samui were present at the ceremony.
H.E. Mr. Kirill Barsky opened the ceremony with welcoming remarks. He emphasized that the establishment of the Honorary Consulate in Samui is an landmark event in the Russian-Thai relations manifesting the beginning of a new phase of development of tourism and expanding inter-regional business, cultural and people-to people contacts. This decision was triggered by the continuous growth of the Russian tourists flow to Thailand which in 2017 reached 1 million 350 thousand people. In the first quarter of 2018 Thailand registered a 28 percent hike in tourist arrivals from Russia. In Ambassador’s opinion, this is clear evidence that the recent years’ trend of broadening of relations and multifaceted cooperation between Russia and Thailand is gaining momentum.
In his inauguration speech Mr. Ashwani Bajaj, Honorary Consul of the Russian Federation in Suratthani province assured the audience that he would do everything in his power to properly protect rights and legitimate interests of Russian citizens in his consular district, to render every possible assistance to Russians residing or visiting Samui and to facilitate implementation of Russian business projects here.
In presence of the high-ranking guests, relatives and friends of the newly appointed Honorary Consul H.E. Mr. Kirill Barsky and Mr. Ashwani Bajaj cut the ribbon in front of the Office of the Honorary Consul which will be located at “W Koh Samui” Hotel. The participants of the ceremony welcomed the ribbon-cutting with a round of applause.
