On May 9, 2018 the whole Russia celebrated its principle holiday – the Day of Victory in the Great Patriotic War. The Russian diaspora in Thailand did not take a back seat as usual.
This year «Immortal regiment» rallies as well as meetings to honour memory of the heroes fallen in battles were organized with unprecedented scale. Pattaya held the «Immortal regiment» procession for the second time and gathered around 800 Russians – permanent residents as well as people temporarily residing or spending vacations in Thailand. They marched two kilometers down the city beach road carrying national flags and portraits of their grandparents who fought during the war. In the evening a concert and video-link with «Immortal regiment» in Moscow were organized in the central part of the city followed by a screening of the feature film «Sobibor», the latest hit of the Russian movie market, in the «Central Festival» shopping mall.
For the first time this year more than 200 people came to the compound of the Russian Orthodox Church in the name of Holy Life-Giving Trinity in Phuket to pay tribute to the memory of those who perished at the battlefields and to celebrate the Great Victory. The «Immortal regiment» procession and the concert featuring both adults’ and children’s performances were arranged right in front of the church.
To a surprise of many, Russian compatriots living in Samui held their own «Immortal regiment» rally. They organized a commemorative event to honour memory of the heroes of the Great Patriotic War near the Holy Ascension Church. After the requiem service a war songs concert was held. Its participants read letters from the front-line and recited poetry about the Victory. Ribbons of Saint George (symbol of the Victory) were distributed while kids received military forage caps.
