On May 15-16, 2017, Bangkok hosted the East Asia Summit Workshop on Regional Security Architecture with participation of the Russian delegation headed by H.E. Mr. Alexey Ovchinnikov, Director of the Department of Asian and Pacific Cooperation of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation.
The meeting was chaired by H.E. Dr. Surya Chingdawongse, Director-General of the Department of ASEAN Affairs of the Thai Foreign Ministry.
This was the sixth round of the EAS multilateral consultations, which were initiated by Russia with the strong support of China and Brunei and launched in 2013.
During the meeting representatives of 18 countries discussed prospects of creation of an architecture of security and sustainable development in the Asia-Pacific region adequate to the existing challenges and threats as well as ways to strengthen EAS as a premier platform for a leaders-led dialogue on region’s strategic issues.
The Thai hosts will report on the outcomes and recommendations of the Workshop to the EAS Senior Officials at their meeting in Manila on May 23, 2017.
